Indonesia: A Mission Touched by God’s Grace

Indonesia, Sr. Shyby Simon Pazhukunnel, 01/21/2026.- Indonesia’s history is a rich tapestry of faiths and cultures. From the 7th to the 13th century, Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms shaped the land. Christianity arrived early through Nestorian monks, later spreading more widely with European contact in the 16th century. Islam took firm root by the end of the 13th century and remains the dominant faith today. After centuries of colonization under the Dutch, Indonesia joyfully proclaimed its independence on August 17, 1945. Now home to over 270 million people, speaking more than 700 languages, it is the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, marked by diversity, resilience, and hope. Despite economic challenges and frequent natural calamities, Indonesia shines with warmth and harmony. The people are simple, generous, and deeply respectful of elders. Religious tolerance is lived daily, making this land a beautiful witness to unity in diversity.

The Presence of the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation

“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way.” (Exodus 23:20) Trusting in God’s providence, Sr. Deepa Moonjely, Sr. Shyby Simon Pazhukunnel, and Sr. Sujitha R. began their mission journey to Indonesia on 13 November 2024. With faith-filled yet trembling hearts, they arrived in Maumere on Flores Island. The Rogationist Fathers lovingly welcomed them, offering shelter and support, and helping them establish a chapel. God’s goodness soon unfolded further as the sisters were able to acquire a piece of land for their mission. Their ministry now extends to parish service, vocation promotion, and youth and education ministries.

Vocation Promotion: Sowing Seeds of Hope

Vocation promotion holds a special place in their mission. In Christian-majority islands, schools warmly welcome the sisters to share the charism of Blessed Marie Poussepin. Though travel is often difficult, across mountains, poor roads, and long distances, the generosity of the people makes every hardship lighter. Even strangers open their homes and hearts. While many young girls initially respond, only a few persevere; these are gently accompanied through visits, calls, and family interactions, trusting that God will nurture what He has begun (cf. Philippians 1:6).

Parish Ministry: Serving with Compassion

In parish ministry, the sisters serve at St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus Sub-station under Nelle Parish. They assist in distributing Holy Communion, support catechism classes, and visit the elderly, the sick, and struggling families. During Christmas and Easter, they joyfully respond to parish needs, discerning how best to strengthen faith and hope among the people.

Indeed, the mission in Indonesia is a quiet yet powerful testimony to God’s faithfulness. As Scripture assures us, “The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24)
